ICW Brings Learn-to-Swim Lessons to Midwood High School Students

Midwood High School, in partnership with Inclusive Community Wellness (ICW), is excited to offer a Learn-to-Swim Program for Midwood students during the Fall 2025 semester. It is a collaboration between ICW and Midwood Principal Dr. Robert Quinlan, Midwood Parent Coordinator Christina Beahan, Midwood Assistant Principal of Guidance Sakaina Simon-Jack and Midwood Athletic Director Beth Vershleiser in conjunction with the Brooklyn South High School Superintendency of Michael Prayor.

Swim Lessons, Aqua Aerobics, Masters and Community Swim @ Brooklyn College

Swim Lessons at Brooklyn College in the Midwood section of Brooklyn for children ages 4 to 14 and for adults will begin on Sunday, September 21 and will run until December 14 - ten sessions. We will offer four different adult learn to swim classes, five children's swimming classes, Aqua Aerobics, a new master swim group AND free community

We also will offer Red Cross Lifeguard + CPR Certification.

Outdoor Water Polo Clinics in Queens

Coaches Mark Katsev and David Shalman will lead a series of outdoor water polo clinics on Wednesdays at the Park City Swim Club in Rego Park, Queens. The dates are July 16, 23, 30; August 6, 13. Clinics will run from 5:30 - 7:30pm.

These training and scrimmages will not only help young athletes develop their water polo skills but coaches and players from Fordham, George Washington, Princeton and USC will oversee practices and evaluate participants.

Free Swimming + Splash Ball

In March and April ICW held an incredible community swim + splash ball program sponsored by The Scouts BSA and USA Water Polo. For five weeks we opened up the Brooklyn College pool to Midwood and Flatbush residents to swim and learn splash ball - all free!

Water, Water Everywhere, but for Many New Yorkers No Swimming or Safety

The disparity in swim access and safety in America's largest city is worsening due to a lifeguard shortage. A symposium on August 18 in Downtown Brooklyn will bring together officials and community leaders for a discussion on increasing safe swimming opportunities for all New Yorkers. Free Red Cross Certification Mints New Lifeguards

Due to a lifeguard shortage threatening Brooklyn kids' summer, Inclusive Community Wellness is working to increase local pool guards.
In mid-June, ICW offered a week-long, free Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR certification.

ICW financed the training / exam costs for 14 New Yorkers to get valid Red Cross certification.

Aquatic Wellness in Fort Greene

From mid-November to mid-December last year, Inclusive Community Wellness (ICW) held vital health + wellness programs in Downtown Brooklyn. Every Tuesday and Thursday we hosted learn-to-swim sessions for children and adults from 7 – 9pm at the Long Island University Pool.

Kids aged 4 – 12 enjoyed a 45-minute session at 7 pm At 8 pm, our skilled instructors taught swimming to adults—a life-saving activity that ICW deems crucial for local families.

Brooklyn Swims! Everyone in the pool!

From July 18 through August 19 2022, ICW offered free swim lessons—almost 700 during a four week stretch—to hundreds of children ages 4-13 at the LIU Brooklyn Pool.

Many families responded enthusiastically to our program and our list of prospective swimmers now exceeds 250. This demonstrates how critical this issue is for Brooklyn parents. Our goal is to continue this program beyond our summer initiative and offer three afterschool days a week with two swim sessions a day to provide exceptional swim instruction to 120 children a week.
